Tesco trials loose fruit & veg in bid to reduce plastic
2019-07-22

From:Packaging News

Tesco is to trial the removal of plastic wrapping from some fruit and vegetables in an attempt to reduce packaging waste.

The retailer said it would start the month-long trial at two of its Extra stores, in Watford and Swindon, removing plastic from 45 foods, including include apples, onions, mushrooms, peppers, bananas and avocados, where loose alternatives are available.

Last year Tesco announced that it would be free of hard-to-recycle plastic packaging by 2019 and make all packaging fully recyclable by 2025.

Despite media and consumer concerns over plastic, It has been argued that removing plastic packaging from food products could result in another, perhaps more widely damaging environmental problem, food waste increase, which is something Tesco said it will be monitoring closely.

Sarah Bradbury, director of quality at Tesco, said: “We hope this trial proves popular with customers. We’ll be keeping a close eye on the results, including any impact on food waste.”

The development follows the announcement of a similar measure from Aldi at stores in Scotland.
